IPod Mods - The Ship Of Theseus

As someone that watched a particular Aussie Man back in 2020. I had gained a large interest in high fidelity audio. and from this. i learned about a really intresting part of the internet. the Ipod modding scene. the Ipod being such a revolutionary piece of  consumer audio history. it's no suprise that there are people that want to keep using it for its build quality sound quality or just for it being an important part of their life. and its something that sucked me in, convincing me to try and mod and modernize an ipod. and.... jesus christ could i never do it again

With the last Ipod classic being released in 2008 It's really really behind.  every model has disk hard drives. and the capacity gets exponentially smaller as they get older. and that's not to say anything about writing and deleting times. I am blessed to only be young enough to know solid state drives cause HOLY MOLY. Yeah the storage media sucks. but at least the charging port is....... the 30 pin connector which is.... older than me. so you can imagine someone won't have a spare 30 pin cable. and with this having 2008 data transfer speeds. But it will be fine to charge the worn out and spicy pillow status battery that is a demand to add to your refurb list. The ipod only feels as good as it looks. but hey what really matters is on the inside

The bit about ipod doom

Okay using the actual stock ipod OS is worth it if you are already invested if you have already temped the forbidden fruit. but for us pirates and audio nerds. we got flacs and weird audio formats. and a need to play doom on a touch wheel. so of course rock box is here and for it being opensource freeware. it is incredible honestly. and is something that is a need for making it proper open source. for it to work with lossless files. songs not on itunes and M3u and unicode M3u files. and themes are fucking sick. and rockbox has minesweeper which is like so much better than solitare......

This needs Usb-c, Bluetooth, 1 tb,5000mah, and better dac, 

Some things are a requirements when modding such an old device. batteries and flash storage are a must. +10 year old lithium batteries can leave an ipod with not even enough energy to keep itself on. making trouble shooting impossible unless you have a 30 pin and even firewire to certain extents. Disk drives are unreliable. especially in a portable device. so the IFlash kits are the choice. another thing that could not allow you to trouble shoot other issues with it. even after that the fact that these are ages old portable consumer electronics. issues will find you. usb-c mods. bigger batteries bluetooth and wireless charging. you rekon this would be a peak audio machine........ right? Everything has been modded except the logic board. and this holds the biggest issue with the ipod.

Now I don't believe any modder claims that the Ipod is a hifi player. but its pretty obvious apple made the Amp and Dac to be consumer grade. this leads to..... audiophiles. high ohm headphones and a low power amp leads to external amps being a requirement. high sensitivity IEMS could expose hissing and distortion in the amp. something that happened to me. the Dac in certain models has a certain sound signature leads to  endless debates. External  DAC support is iffy. and the capacitor mod. the final frontier. 7 dollars for 2 capacitors you have to solder yourself and drill the mother board to install. and possibly already have the iflash mod installed to have enough space to fit. all of this to remove RF noise. Be Safe out there fellow audiophiles. 

Just buy a dap man......

Unless you want to spend months on modding and making your ipod dependable enough to daily run. just buy a Digital Audio Player. I understand the ipod has a status but..... almost all chi-fi DAPs can do an ipods job with no sweat and even more without needing mods. There are many guides to what Dap to buy so I recommend that.  okk bye bye
